The YMCA at Virginia Tech has a wonderful, rich history and an incredible future! During the past 132  years, the Y has served the New River Valley with diverse programs to enhance the quality of life in our area.

The YMCA is an independent non-profit organization.  Funding for our programs comes from various sources, including your donations, the YMCA Thrift Stores, the annual YMCA Book Fair and Annual Crafts Fair, and through grants.  Less than 1% of our funding comes from Virginia Tech.

And, if we have no pool and no gym, just what is it we do? We serve the community through our four main program areas: Community, Education, International, and Student Programs.

2006 YMCA Service Record
Highlights

The YMCA at VT served over 27,000 community members in 2006.

Through our community outreach (tutoring, community gardens, buddy program, senior connections, etc.) the Y touches hundreds of lives each week.   On top of that, we have the Thrift Shop shoppers, families and organizations that benefit from Thrift Shop donations, Open University participants, International Programs participants, donors, volunteersoyou can see how this adds up quickly.

Did you know that in addition to the clothing we sell through the Thrift Shop that we also recycle over 50 tons of textiles each year?  That:s approximately 26 tractor-trailer loads of clothing that are arenyt in good enough condition to sell, but that we keep out of the local landfills.  Can you imagine how many computers we will recycle through the Sustainable Blacksburg program?

In 2006, the Y had over 500 student volunteers and a large percentage of those volunteers work with us year after year.  It is wonderful to see how attached these students get to the children and senior citizens they interact with week after week.

The Y is one of the largest providers of community service (court ordered volunteerism) in the area.

267 community members joined us for the Yms free Sunday hikes in 2006

Project Home Repair tackled 5 projects, two of them were huge, to assist families in need.

As a whole, the Y had 1,385 volunteers in 2006 who gave over 20,000 hours of their time.  We couldnct do a fraction of the work we do without our wonderful, generous volunteers.

One of the really wonderful things we are experiencing with the new Y Center is new partnerships!  As many of you know, weave hosted several community events in the new building and one of the next ones we are participating in is the NRV Green Home Tour & Seminar.  They chose to start the event at the Y because of all of the @greenv building items we have put into the renovations.  We are honored to participate and to have space for the community to use.

Just think what we can accomplish when we get Phase II finished!
