YMCA at Virginia Tech Programs

The YMCA at Virginia Tech has a rich history and an incredible future. During the past 149 years, the Y has served the New River Valley with diverse programs to enhance the quality of life in our area. Join us for some of our great community programs, including:

Alternative Service Breaks--Exposing Virginia Tech students to critical social issues through intensive immersion experiences. Students live and work alongside residents of their host communities on projects addressing critical, unmet needs.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes - These classes are free of charge and held in partnership with Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley. Free childcare is provided.

International Programs--Bringing together Internationals and Americans to welcome and integrate Internationals into the community while providing a comfortable venue for cross cultural friendship, information, education, support, and service.

Pottery Studio -- Arts education through ceramics. All age groups are welcome to work with ceramics in order to grow one’s aesthetic awareness, reassure creative confidence, and stimulate personal entrepreneurship.

Senior Connections--Volunteers get paired with a senior based on their mutual interests. They hang out with seniors at Warm Hearth Village by socializing, sharing craft activities, exchanging stories, and celebrating life.

Sustainability Initiatives--The Sustainability Initiative Program is a partnership between Sustainable Blacksburg, the Town of Blacksburg, Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority (MRSWA), and the YMCA. The focus is on promoting a green community through the recycling of metal, electronics, textiles, and batteries. Additionally, cutting down on the volume of recyclable items placed into landfills and the waste stream.

Thrift Shop -- located in Blacksburg, our thrift store provides a high-quality, low-cost shopping alternative as well as a wonderful way to relieve the landfill burden by recycling usable goods. The Y Thrift Shop is a location to donate gently used items that are either sold or recycled. The proceeds of the thrift shop remain local and help support leadership development, community programs, and opportunities for the completion of court mandated community service. The Thrift Shop also offers opportunity for class based service and community members who wish to volunteer and support the outreach programs of the YMCA at Virginia Tech.

Youth Programs--Mission Building community through learning, leadership and service. Creating a safe environment for students to receive homework help and enjoy recreational activities and distribution of healthy food to students.

Y Student Programs -- providing volunteer and leadership opportunities for VT students since 1873. Join one of our many community service programs and volunteer with kids, lower-income families and/or seniors. Whether you are looking for a one-time volunteer opportunity for your group or a long-term commitment as an individual, the YMCA at VT works with you to find the right fit for you and your schedule.

Ytoss--Collecting new and gently used items and resell them to students at an affordable cost. This prevents so many items from going into the landfill which is a huge sustainability initiative for Blacksburg.
