YMCA RCPS Elementary After School Program

The YMCA at Virginia Tech is committed to youth development. Since 1873, the YMCA at VT has served the youth of the NRV through school and enrichment programs that foster mentoring relationships, encourage the youth, and teach academics, health, and sustainability.

WHO:  RCPS elementary school students

WHEN: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3:15-6:00 p.m.
Thursday 12:30 – 6:00 p.m.

WHERE: Belle Heth Elementary School
Students attending McHarg Elementary will be bussed by RCPS to Belle Heth
There is no bus service home at the end of the program, so students will need to be picked up from Belle Heth.

WHAT:
Licensed by the Virginia Department of Education

  • Operating on-site in the school
  • Supervised by a site director who meets VDOE requirements

Affordable

  • Sliding scale based on household income
  • Authorized to accept Department of Social Services subsidy payments
  • Some scholarships will be available

Quality-based

  • Anticipated classroom ratio of 1 teacher to 15 students (1:15)
  • Implementing a curriculum focusing on
    • Academic assistance and enrichment
    • Socio-emotional development
  • Paid Radford University interns (mentors) will provide academic enrichment activities.
  • Students will enjoy a healthy snack
  • Playtime is structured into the daily program activities.

If schools close early or do not open for inclement weather or other reasons, the Y Afterschool program will also close. 

Registration

For planning purposes, we ask all interested participants to sign-up and pay for a 1-WEEK PERIOD for each child who will participate in the  program. This will be credited to your first week’s use once the program has started.

 

* You likely qualify for assistance under the Virginia Child Care Subsidy Program. For planning purposes, please register using the $1.00 option. We will explore this with you as the program launches.  

**You may still qualify for the Virginia Child Care Subsidy Program, depending upon household size and monthly income. We will explore this with you as the program launches.  

1 Household income is defined as Adjusted Gross Income for all parties of the household as stated on line 11 on Form 1040 of your tax return

Financial Assistance

  • Virginia DSS Child Care Assistance – as a licensed program, the Y will able to accept Virginia DSS assistance aimed at helping parents afford childcare.
  • YMCA Scholarships – as the program develops, the Y expects that some scholarship support may become available.
